Why ninety seconds beats a twelve-step routine

Adherence is the only active that works at one hundred percent. The science of tiny habits is unkind to complicated bathrooms.

A spare grooming still life on black marble

Phillippa Lally’s work at UCL put a number on a folk idea: automaticity, on average, took sixty-six days, with a range that ran past eight months. The behaviours that stuck were small, same-place, same-time. The behaviours that died were ambitious.

A twelve-step Korean-inspired routine is a beautiful essay. It is a poor plan for a man who has a train. Implementation intentions — ‘after I rinse, I press serum’ — beat motivational speeches. BJ Fogg’s tiny-habits frame is the same idea in a different coat: make it small enough that skipping it feels stranger than doing it.

The best formula is the one that is on the face at 07:12 on a Tuesday.

A house-sized ritual

Cleanse. Treat. Finish. Ninety seconds if you do not linger. Night is the same, minus the sun. Once a week, a mask. The rest is noise. Men abandon skincare because it was designed as a hobby, not as a dose.

  • Keep the three pieces where the hands already go — sink, not a distant cabinet.
  • Pair it with a habit that already lives: after teeth, before coffee.
  • If you miss a night, do not double in the morning. Resume. That is the whole psychology.
